The full picture · Both halves working

Building a great website is roughly half of growing your tourism business online. It is the foundation everything else is built on. Get this half wrong and nothing else you do will work. But the website alone is never the whole answer.

A great website on its own is incomplete. It is a shop with no footfall. The second half of the work is driving the right people through the door, consistently, affordably, and in growing numbers over time.

Chapter 28 · Think Bigger

Your website is half the journey.
But it's the half that matters most.

Half

The website. Which everything depends, where most operators underinvest.

Half

The traffic, the channels that send the right visitors to a website that converts them.

Whole

The system, with both halves working together, is what sustainable growth looks like.

The website is the foundation.
Not the whole building.

Without a strong website, every other marketing investment is diminished, because everything leads back to it. Social media advertising, email campaigns, SEO effort, all of it sends visitors to your website. The website then does its job: converting those visitors into bookings. Investing in traffic generation for a website that does not convert is expensive and demoralising.

The two halves are genuinely interdependent. Every euro spent on social media advertising, every hour invested in SEO, every email campaign sent to a carefully built list, all of it leads back to your website. If the website is not ready to receive those visitors and turn their interest into a booking, the marketing spend is largely wasted. The order of operations matters: the website first, then the traffic.

Which is why this book exists and why it covers the website in the depth it does. The website is the piece of infrastructure that everything else depends on. Get it right first, then invest in the channels that drive visitors to it.

The second half: getting the right people to your door

Three channels. Different strengths.
The same destination.

Search engine optimisation is the channel with the most durable long-term return. Organic search traffic costs nothing per click and tends to be high-intent; someone who types "kayaking Kerry" into Google is actively looking for what you offer. The challenge is earning the ranking, which takes time and consistent effort but compounds significantly over the years.

Social media is the channel with the highest potential for discovery, reaching people who are not yet searching for what you offer but who respond to the right image or story at the right moment. Email marketing is the channel with the highest return on investment for most businesses that use it well because the audience has already chosen to hear from you, the cost of reaching them is minimal, and the relationship is warmer than any cold channel can replicate.

think bigger

The principle: both halves working together

The businesses that grow most effectively online are the ones that understand this relationship and invest in both sides of it deliberately. Not all at once; that is neither necessary nor advisable. But with a clear sense of the sequence: first the foundation, then the traffic. First the website that converts, then the various digital channels that drive quality visitors directly to it.

This book has covered the most important half: giving you a website that is worth visiting. The journey does not end here. It starts here.
